This publication contains tables of rolling bearings which are mainly used in rolling mills. On the one hand it covers bearings with standardized dimensions (DIN 616), and on the other hand bearings which were developed especially for rolling mills. The bearing tables are complemented by tables of support rollers for multi-roll cold rolling mills.

The new radial insert ball bearing and housing units FAG Black Series from Schaeffler give easy mounting, smooth running and high reliability and thus allow particularly economical bearing arrangements. The dimensions of the FAG housings, made from flake graphite cast iron and with a primer paint coating, conform to JIS B 1559. These single piece cast housings can support moderate to high radial and axial loads. The radial insert ball bearings have basic protection against corrosion due to the Durotect®B coating. The bearing units are particularly suitable for applications with moderate to high loads.

Spherical roller bearings are double row, self-retaining units comprising solid outer rings with a concave raceway, solid inner rings and barrel rollers with cages. The inner rings have cylindrical or tapered bores. The symmetrical barrel rollers orient themselves freely on the concave outer ring raceway. As a result, shaft flexing and misalignment of the bearing seats are compensated.

The customer is one of the worldwide leading manufacturers of flat steel with a comprehensive range of grades, sizes and surface finishes. Challenge for Schaeffler: The plant builder had modified the 4-high cold rolling mill to increase its capacity. However, after the modification the steel producer was no longer able to produce high quality strips that matched the customers’ requirements. The finished product was always marred by chatter marks. The cause of these flaws was supposed to be an increased level of rolling stand vibration.

With a turnover of 13,2 billion euros in the financial year 2006/2007, ThyssenKrupp Steel AG (TKS) is the leading manufacturer of high quality flat steel in Germany. Challenge for Schaeffler At the Dortmund plant, for a long time TKS has been using an online condition monitoring system based on FAG components for the monitoring of the pinion stand gearboxes and for chatter mark detection on the BETA tandem line. Qualified analysis and evaluation of the measured data is carried out by the vibration experts of Schaeffler.

With a turnover of 5.6 billion euros, ThyssenKrupp Steel AG (TKS) is the leading manufacturer of high-grade flat steel products in Germany. TKS operates a hot rolling mill at their factory in Bochum. Challenge for Schaeffler The weak spot of the rolling stands in any hot strip mill are the roller bearings on the work rollers. Under extreme operating conditions only relatively short stoppage times are possible. Unplanned stoppages and expensive conse- quential damage, such as damage to the roller seating or even journal fracture on the work rollers, may be the result.

Established in 1907, Tata Steel is the world’s sixth largest steel company with an annual crude steel capacity of 28 million tons. Challenge for Schaeffler: At the Jamshedpur plant, the company has three converters. All of them had to be modernised. During the overhauling of converter 2 also its volume inside its brick lining should be increased to 153 m 3 , increasing its output from 140 tons to 170 tons of liquid crude steel. To ensure a quick and professional mounting of the bearings and housings for converter 2, Tata Steel awarded the contract to Schaeffler.

The work rolls of large four-high rolling stands are driven via universal joint drive shafts. After every rolling cycle the height of the rolls is adjusted. The drive shafts must follow the adjusting movement. Therefore they have universal joints. Due to the height adjustment, the shaft length varies as well, which has to be compensated in a coupling sleeve. The universal joint shafts are generally very long to ensure that the deflection angles do not become too large. Because of the high torques which have to be transmitted they are strong and heavy.

The requirements placed on the quality of rolled products in relation to flatness, thickness tolerance and surface quality are continually increasing, thus placing very high demands on the back-up rollers used in multi-roll cold rolling mills. In close partnership with the customer, we therefore continually design, test and develop to production-ready status new bearings optimally suited to this application. The quality of FAG and INA back-up rollers is ensured by means of high precision machining and sophisticated measurement methods.
