FAG Rolling Bearings for Rolling Mills

Repair and Reconditioning of Rolling Bearings

The characteristics and condition of rolling bearings have a significant influence on the production process. Preventive and condition-based maintenance measures are intended to maintain a consistently high level of plant availability. It is often the case that new rolling bearings are fitted although the existing bearings could be restored to as-new condition by means of appropriate reconditioning. In many cases, reconditioning of rolling bearings is more cost-effective than using new bearings.

Modal Analysis helps to increase Speed of Stretch Reducing Mill

The Spanish customer is a world leading manufacturer of seamless pipes. He offers a wide range of products for different industrial areas, e.g. the oil, automotive and mechanical construction industry as well as the energy sector and the overall construction industry. Challenge for Schaeffler: The customer had invested about 80 million euro in its production process with the objective to install a new pipe reduction gear on its main reduction stand. However, for unknown reasons he was unable to increase the machine speed beyond 80 percent capacity for the most important products.

Replacement of Main Trunnion Bearings on BOS Plant Vessels

The Tata Steel Group has operations in 26 countries and produces 28 million tonnes of steel per year. Port Talbot Works is part of the Strip Products UK business, producing hot rolled, cold rolled and hot dip coated steel. Challenge for Schaeffler: Tata Steel Port Talbot has two BOS steelmaking vessels (V1 & V2) in operation. The main trunnion bearings on a BOS (Basic Oxygen Steelmaking) plant at Tata Steel Port Talbot had to be replaced due to a sudden bearing failure on the non- drive side (NDS) of the V2 BOS plant vessel. Loss of operation of a BOS vessel would result in significant lost revenue for Tata Steel.

Integrated Bearing and Service Solution for Converters

The customer is a leading European steel manufacturer with several production plants. Its annual production of crude steel exceeds 10 million tons. Challenge for Schaeffler: The oxygen steel plant operates two converters. The customer wished to replace converter 1 and – at the same time – increase this vessel’s size to a capacity of 400 tons. This application demanded a highly ambitious solution for the trunnion bearing itself as well as for the newly designed ferrocast housing. As the converter is an absolutely critical bottleneck to the downstream inline production processes and the customer had already had excellent experiences with Schaeffler condition monitoring solutions, the customer decided to have the bearings and gears monitored.

Condition Monitoring with the FAG DTECT X1 in a Rolling Mill

The name of Aleris Aluminium Koblenz GmbH stands for one of the world‘s leading manufacturers of high-quality rolled aluminum products. Since production began in Koblenz in 1964 the company has been providing a specialized range of products manufactured to high quality standards. Challenge for Schaeffler: In a rolling mill there is a hazard of rolling stand fires due to hot running and loss of quality in the rolled product due to roller bearing defects on the bridle rollers. In order to offset this risk the customer was looking for an opportunity to coun - teract the risk of failure. Schaeffler therefore was asked to monitor the critical machine components with the aid of vibration diagnosis.

Split spherical roller bearings

Costs savings through rapid bearing replacement at difficult to access bearing locations

Split spherical roller bearings are principally used where the replacement of unsplit spherical roller bearings would require costly additional work, involving the removal of gears or couplings, the dismounting of drives or the dismantling of shaft power trains. The use of split spherical roller bearings reduces the downtime of machinery and plant.

Sealed Spherical Roller Bearings

With reliable protection against contamination

Spherical roller bearings are double row, self-retaining units comprising solid outer rings with a concave raceway, solid inner rings and barrel rollers with cages. The inner rings have cylindrical or tapered bores. The symmetrical barrel rollers orient themselves freely on the concave outer ring raceway. As a result, shaft flexing and misalignment of the bearing seats are compensated.
