FAG Rolling Bearings in Rolling Mills

Schaeffler has for many years worked on the design and production of bearings for rolling mills and gathered extensive experience in this field. This is presented in the present publication. A designer of rolling mills will find here the principles for selection and calculation of roll neck bearings. Their mounting and maintenance is also covered in detail. For any questions not covered under these principles, the Schaeffler engineering service can provide assistance. The dimensions and performance data of rolling bearings for rolling mills are given in Catalogue GL1.

Radial Insert Ball Bearings and Housing Units

Black Series

The new radial insert ball bearing and housing units FAG Black Series from Schaeffler give easy mounting, smooth running and high reliability and thus allow particularly economical bearing arrangements. The dimensions of the FAG housings, made from flake graphite cast iron and with a primer paint coating, conform to JIS B 1559. These single piece cast housings can support moderate to high radial and axial loads. The radial insert ball bearings have basic protection against corrosion due to the Durotect® B coating. The bearing units are particularly suitable for applications with moderate to high loads.

Performance Based Contract in the Steel Industry

ARMCO do Brasil is a manufacturer of specialty steel strip products, serving a broad industrial sector of the local and international market in Brasil. To the wide range of products contains for example zinc plated products, dozens of thermal and surface treatments and non pollutant products. Challenge for Schaeffler: In 2006, ARMCO do Brasil decided to conclude a performance based contract for its São Paulo plant in order to reduce the 874 hours of unplanned downtime (costs: approximately € 50 000/year) as well as the demand for bearings, seals and lubricant (costs: approximately € 500 000/year).

Reconditioning in the Steel Industry

The customer operates an stainless steel plant in Belgium with approximately 1300 employees. The annual steel production amounts to approximately one million tons. Challenge for Schaeffler As Schaeffler Belgium’s portfolio did not previously include the reconditioning of spherical roller bearings from continuous casting plants, Schaeffler’s biggest competitor predominantly provided this customer and other steel works with this service. Schaeffler Belgium has extended its range of services to include rolling bearing reconditioning independent of the manufacturer. This service takes place in various reconditioning stages.

Repair and Reconditioning of Rolling Bearings

The characteristics and condition of rolling bearings have a significant influence on the production process. Preventive and condition-based maintenance measures are intended to maintain a consistently high level of plant availability. It is often the case that new rolling bearings are fitted although the existing bearings could be restored to as-new condition by means of appropriate reconditioning. In many cases, reconditioning of rolling bearings is more cost-effective than using new bearings.

Replacement of Main Trunnion Bearings on BOS Plant Vessels

The Tata Steel Group has operations in 26 countries and produces 28 million tonnes of steel per year. Port Talbot Works is part of the Strip Products UK business, producing hot rolled, cold rolled and hot dip coated steel. Challenge for Schaeffler: Tata Steel Port Talbot has two BOS steelmaking vessels (V1 & V2) in operation. The main trunnion bearings on a BOS (Basic Oxygen Steelmaking) plant at Tata Steel Port Talbot had to be replaced due to a sudden bearing failure on the non- drive side (NDS) of the V2 BOS plant vessel. Loss of operation of a BOS vessel would result in significant lost revenue for Tata Steel.
